The Ministry of Finance has advised government officials to “strictly avoid” Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools on official devices, including ChatGPT and DeepSeek, because they “pose risks to the confidentiality of government data and documents.”
“It has been determined that AI tools and AI Apps (such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek, etc.) on office computers and devices endanger the confidentiality of government data and documents.” It is therefore recommended that the use of AI tools/AI Apps in office devices be strictly avoided. This may be brought to the attention of all employees. This is issued with the approval of the Finance Secretary,” according to an order signed by Pradeep Kumar Singh, Joint Secretary, DoE.

The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), another central government agency, held a training session on the usage of “ChatGPT-4 Plus” for officials with the rank of Joint Secretary and lower, including Directors and Deputy Secretaries, months prior to the DoE’s circular.
The training took place after the circular to DoPT officials was sent on October 10, 2024. and was held from October 14-16 of the same year in seven batches.
